Green Flag Award

We were over whelmed to hear that we had been awarded the Eco School Green Flag award in July, Encams praised the school for the whole school commitment to sustainability and the impact it has had on the school, students and the local community. We were praised for the effective communication around the school, especially with it being a secondary school. Mrs Jones, the Green flag assessor praised the school on the range of activities, the involvement of all students and the commitment of the pupils who showcased the school on the day.

The feedback was very positive when awarded the Green Flag stating that our school was to be selected as a case study of good practice for Encams, for future eco school projects.

As a school we try to get as many people involved in sustainability, so it is not just limited to the work the eco school do. It is in our lessons, during special curriculum days and weeks like this one which is the annual sustainability week. Also we are very lucky to have a school that has some special resources to help us learn about renewable energy technology such as the hydrogen full cell and the wind turbine.

The school has worked hard with lots of different pupils on different projects to make Bydales a more interesting place. The eco school and year 7 & 8 pupils helped build the willow domes at the wetland. Our allotment involved all the year 8 pupils designing and the year 10 pupils working with Askam Bryan horticultural college built the allotment. We had a ground force day to do all the planting, parents, family, local business and school Governors all came along to help.

The eco school developed the butterfly garden project with local primary schools. We gave a presentation to the year 6 children about butterflies and gave them seeds to plant and grow. During their induction week they came up to our allotment and planted the butterfly garden.
